  2. Oh Really O’Reilly

    TV commentator Bill O’Reilly rails against all sorts of things in an entertaining and at times even informative way. But when it comes to speculators manipluating the price of oil, he really piles on the scorn. This is all on behalf of the folks, you understand, ’cause he’s looking out for us. To help in this wothwhile task it might be good if Mr. O’Reilly put down the ratings reports and picked up an economics text. He would be better off for it, and so would his viewers.  (more…)


  3. Price Information

    Sometimes price fluctuations are painful to investors. The DJIA dropped 733 points today. Ouch! Sometimes price fluctuations offer relief to consumers. Crude oil is under $75 per barrel today. Road trip! But all prices send important signals in a free economy that are vital in keeping goods and services flowing where they are wanted.

    The St. Andrew lesson explores scriptural references to the problem of scarcity, Catholic perspectives on the common good and how competitive free markets can promote it, and the economics of supply and demand.
