1. Grading Obama Administration

    February 27, 2009 by Stephen J. Haessler

Clearly, the change promised during the Presidential campaign season is in the wind. But is it good? Evaluate some of the new administration’s policies in three new A&M polls. Simply navigate to the polls page by clicking on the word Polls at top right. Thanks for expressing yourself! And, if you would like to suggest poll topics for next time, please send us your thoughts.

  2. There is no such committee, yet. Given the recent push by government, especially the federal government, to assume jurisdiction over more and more areas of economic and social activity, it seems to be the direction we are heading in. I think this is a very wrong direction. (more…)

  3. Marquette Students Respond

    February 15, 2009 by Stephen J. Haessler

Welcome Theology and Economics students of Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin! MUHS was founded in 1857 and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2007. It has carried on its Catholic education mission of teaching the whole person for generations. It is a good place in which to learn.

Thanks go out to Fr. Tom Doyle, S.J. of the MUHS Theology Department and to Dave Cooks, MUHS Economics Chair for directing some of their students’ intellectual capital toward this week’s discussion question. (more…)

  4. Slavery and Freedom

    February 13, 2009 by Stephen J. Haessler

Just returned from a brilliant lecture at the University of Arizona on slavery and freedom. The lecture was given by a visiting scholar named Professor Jacob Levy of McGill University. It was very illuminating. Though I was not able to talk afterward with Prof. Levy, I would like to formally thank him here.

The lecture traced the origins of the idea of freedom in the west. I mention just two of the many compelling ideas that he shared. (more…)

  5. Joseph Keckeissen on The End of the Crisis

February 9, 2009 by Joseph Keckeissen

Joseph Keckeissen is with the Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala City. He is a student of one of the key thinkers in the Austrian School of economic analysis, Ludwig von Mises. My sincere thanks to Professor Keckeissen for sharing his insights with the A&M Blog.

When will the crisis end? Who knows? The grand  gurus are  saying that “the best  we can hope  for is a turnaround over the  summer.”  Are they right? The gist  of this article is to answer this question, in the light of the teachings of my late professor, Ludwig Von Mises. (more…)

  6. Joseph Zoric on the Stimulus Package

February 5, 2009 by Joseph Zoric

“There is no disagreement that we need action by our government, a recovery plan that will help jumpstart the economy.” (President-Elect Barack Obama, January 9, 2009)

    • “With all due respect Mr. President, that is not true. (more…)

  7. Oh Really O’Reilly

    February 3, 2009 by Stephen J. Haessler

TV commentator Bill O’Reilly rails against all sorts of things in an entertaining and at times even informative way. But when it comes to speculators manipluating the price of oil, he really piles on the scorn. This is all on behalf of the folks, you understand, ’cause he’s looking out for us. To help in this wothwhile task it might be good if Mr. O’Reilly put down the ratings reports and picked up an economics text. He would be better off for it, and so would his viewers.  (more…)
